World Comes to Strathbungo !

Well World Foods GLW does, according to their owner, the local supermarket will be opened before the end of May and provide:

a vast selection of herbs and spices - from garem masala, red chilles and everyday salt & pepper;

a large selection of fresh halal meat and also pre-packed meat and poultry;

a local specialist grocery store with the most tempting variety of products and special offers;

and high-quality products at lower prices than Lidl.



The store is already been built and ftted out and is curently being stocked and recruiting staff. World Foods is located on part of the site previously occupied by Ride On, who have recently moved to 61 Queen Elizabeth Ave. Hillington. G52 4NQ.

World Foods can be found at 21/25 Nithsdale Street, Strathbungo G41 2PZ.  We welcome them to the village and wish them every success.

Shawlands Plans for a Plaza Major

A new civic square is planned, in the neighbouring village of Crossmyloof, aimed at providing a cultural heart to the thriving Greater Shawlands community.

The new Shawlands Cross Civic Square (hopefully someone will come up with a better name than that) is part of a £3million-plus scheme for the, ever improving, Southside.  The development, will increase accessibility to Queens Park from Shawlands Cross and effectively extend Glasgow's third largest park into the Southside's main thoroughfare. 

The Pollokshaws Road/Langside Avenue junction at Shawlands Cross has long been home to the A-Listed Langside Halls, the key civic building of the area, and has more recently adopted the Queen's Park Farmers' Market.  The corner also hosts a wide range of shops, restaurants and pubs, many of which provide live music and other cultural activities. A number of sporting venues are also located on corner, which is presently used primarily as a taxi rank.

The development will relocate the taxi rank and replace it with a European style Plaza Major providing an area, furnished with seating, ambient lighting and fountains.  It is envisaged that the setting will also play host to cultural shows and events (concerts, drama, festivals, exhibitions...). 

It is hoped that the exciting venture will add to the rich tapestry of cultural activities already available in Strathbungo, whilst attracting tourists to the village and the Greater Shawlands area.   

Turner Prize in Strathbungo Village !

​​Arguably Europe’s most prestigious visual art award is now in, arguably, Europe's best village:  Strathbungo Village

The Turner Prize, organised by Tate, is awarded to a British artist under the age of 50 for an outstanding exhibition in the preceding year. The Turner Prize introduces us to new artists and new ideas in contemporary art and previous winners include Damien Hirst, Grayson Perry and Gillian Wearing. 

This year’s shortlisted artists are Assemble, Bonnie Camplin, Janice Kerbel and Nicole Wermers. You can see an exhibition of their artwork at Tramway and judge for yourself who the winner should be.
The winner will be announced live on Channel 4 on 7 December.

The exhibition is in the Tramway, on Albert Drive, and is accompanied by an extensive programme of workshops, talks, tours and activities for Strathbungo villagers, and others, to get involved and be inspired by the creativity on show.

Govanhill Baths Endurance Exhibition

I popped along to the latest cultural event at Govanhill Baths on Friday 22nd August and took the opportunity to have a chat with some of the artists and to discuss their work, which aims to celebrate the occupation and success of keeping hope for the baths.

Commonwealth Games Come to Strathbungo

The Glasgow 2.014 Commonwealth Games will be coming to the village of Strathbungo.

The Queen's Baton will visit the village twice on Tuesday 22nd July and is scheduled to enter the Village at Eglinton Toll at 10:40am, turning right along Albert Drive and leaving Strathbungo as it enters Pollockshields at 10:45. The Baton travels though Bellahouston, Govan, Cardonald, Crookston, Pollok, Mosspark, Pollok Park, Langside, Shawlands and Crossmyloof before re-entering Strathbungo at the western edge of the village at 17:45 before finishing at Queens Park at around 18:10.

The Games themselves will also make an appearance in the village, with the Marathon set to run through Strathbungo on Sunday 27th July, providing villagers the opportunity to cheer runners racing through the village for free and twice as the 26.2mile course consists of two laps. The Race will Start at 9:00am.

Southside Festival Fringe 2014

There will be a wide range of musical and other cultural activities taking place in and around the village in between the 9th and the 25th May 2014 as the fast growing Southside Festival Fringe takes place.

Magic Massage at Bewitching Beauty

In the old heart of what was once Strathbungo Village there is a somewhat unique shop, offering a range of witch related services, including psychic readings and magical consultations and selling 'spell kits'. On what is now Pollockshaws Road, Bewitching Beauty is a Beauty & Holistic Salon which as well as offering witchery also sells natural skin care products and offers a range of natural therapies.

Pauline Reid

Shop owner Pauline Reid, who hails from Ayrshire, is a skilled aestheticienne with over 17 years experience in the industry and she is fully qualified in an extensive range of therapies.

Having previously researched into Isabella Goudie, perhaps the most famous witch to have lived in Scotland, I am well aware of the bad press and lack of understanding that people have with regards to witchcraft.

What I hadn't realised through that hidden between the Cosmic Cleanse and Preistess Package in the range of Holistic & Alternative Therapies on offer was Therapeutic Massage a deep invigorating massage which helps to ease aches and pains, sore muscles and can help increase joint mobility. Just what a runner needs!

There were no spells or potions asked for, or received, but there was a magic massage. Although the therapy room is warm and tranquil, with candles and soft music, there was no chance of me falling asleep as Pauline went to work, using her hands and elbows to deep massage my aching muscles and stiff neck, relieving the tense knots and getting into the stiff spots behind my shoulder blades, deep into my thighs and calf muscles too.

An hour later and my body was feeling the benefits of her hard work. I'd highly recommend to any runners looking for a decent massage, I'll be back!
